Some coffees grab our hearts instantly—this fermented washed microlot from Harangal Estate is one. Partnering with Dinesh Pejathaya from Kaad Kaapi for a few years now. Last year's Hospura Estate natural microlot, that he helped us source, was sold out before hitting our website! This year, we zeroed in on this sweet, floral washed gem from the samples he sent us.
Perched on Harangal hill with views over the Harangi dam backwaters, Harangal Estate lies in Madapur, Coorg, Karnataka, producing award-winning Arabica at 1230 MASL with flavors influenced by the diverse landscape. Founded in 1996 by retired Indian Air Force Sqn. Ldr. M.K. Chengapa and realized by his son M.C. Kariappa, the estate grew from small land acquisitions. Indigenous trees like jamun, wild fig, jackfruit, banana, orange, avocado, mango, rosewood, Indian kino, and nandi, along with wildlife such as wild boar, peacocks, and Indian gaur, add unique character.
Harangal Estate is part of the vibrant Kaad Kaapi collective, headed by Dinesh—a singular force in organization, export, and conservation. Eight producers from Chikmagalur and Coorg, spanning backgrounds, ages, and religions, form a tight-knit group (brothers and one sister) committed to safeguarding the environment. They recognize that without preservation, thriving becomes tougher. Their straightforward creed: Profitable quality-focused farms safeguard native ecosystems against quick-profit ventures that erode long-term viability.
This microlot kicks off with selective hand-harvesting and sorting to remove any unripe cherries. After pulping, the beans ferment for 18 hours in fresh water, then get a mechanical wash. Drying takes 10 days on shaded yards, with temps kept under 40°C for top-notch results.
What makes this coffee special is that it manages to boast intense sweetness and dominant floral overtones while completely retaining its clean, “washed” coffee backbone. To accentuate this, we roast this coffee as light as we can go without it being under-developed. We roast it fast and bright, focused on filter. However, if you're like the coffee nerds hanging out in the G-Shot coffee lab, you'll be able to pull some deliciously sweet “modern” espresso with it!
